Part 1: NLP Essentials
Chapter One: What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?
This chapter is a theoretical introduction to Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It gives you an overview of how it was founded, its underlying principles, key benefits, and theoretical modeling systems, metaprograms, and examples you may find useful.
“Neuro” refers to the neurological network – the environment that is perceived by the senses, and the sensory knowledge that is consciously and unconsciously converted into our thinking processes. In turn, these thoughts can influence our physiology, emotions, and behavior.
“Linguistic” refers to how language is utilized to make sense of the world. Language plays an important part in understanding and perceiving the world.
“Programming” refers to the learning process – the various internal methods and built-in models we use to learn things and make decisions.
How NLP Was Founded
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) was created in the 1970s by founders R. Bandler and J. Grinder of the United States and is a semi-scientific approach to interaction, self-development, and counseling. The founders stated that neurological processes (neuro), language (linguistic), and behavioral patterns that have been learned from experience (programming) are interconnected and can be adapted to specific purposes in life. Bandler and Grinder suggested that NLP techniques can "design" the capacities of people so that everyone can improve their abilities.
NLP can deal with psychological issues like phobias, anxiety, tic disorders, mental illness, vision problems, asthma, common cold, and learning disabilities. It is also used to treat emotional and behavioral problems. NLP opponents argue the concept is not scientifically proven and is not even regarded as entirely scientific. Science-based reviews assert that NLP has been founded on inaccurate analogies of the mechanisms of the mind that are incongruent with existing cognitive theory, and therefore encompasses many factual inaccuracies.
Reviews have maintained that studies on NLP work presented major critical flaws, and have struggled to prove Bandler’s, Grinder’s, and other researchers' "extraordinary assertions" to be faulty. Nevertheless, NLP has already been embraced as a tool of management training by authorities, counselors, and mentors in companies that conduct seminars.
The Early Development of NLP
NLP involves a method called modeling and a collection of approaches developed by Bandler and Grinder. Some were learned from the research of M. Erickson, V. Satir, and F. Perls. The concepts of G. Bateson, A. Korzybski, N. Chomsky (especially transformative grammar), and Carlos Castaneda were also investigated by Bandler and Grinder.
The founders believed that their approach would convert the structure and complicated human activity that is evident in the treatments carried out by Perls, Erickson, and Satir, as well as other therapists; the codified elements derived from the structure could then be learned by others. The therapists compiled a book in 1975 named "The Structure of Magic: The Language and Therapy Book" that attempted to codify the therapeutic methodologies of both Satir and Perls.
The founders claimed that they had employed their own modeling system to create the Meta-Model, the framework to collect data and address questions about the language and cognitive patterns of the consumer. They asserted that their transformative grammatical principles provided a
